S1E14*: Bonus Interview Series - Fem in EM
This month, we have something extra special for our listeners of TheCase.Report.
In celebration of International Women’s Month, we’ve got a series of interviews with some of our fantastic female EM colleagues from around the country. Throughout March, we will be dropping these short episodes in order to give you even more TCR to get your teeth into.
The female presence in Emergency Medicine in Ireland has been slowly increasing over the past number of years with incredible doctors paving the way. We get the chance to sit down with some of our colleagues to chat all things Emergency Medicine including why it’s such an invaluable specialty (little bit of shameless specialty promo for those yet undecided!)
Watch this space for a collection of gripping interviews dropping throughout March.
Dr. Lisa Cunningham
Dr. Lisa Cunningham is a proud Mayo-born Emergency Medicine specialist registrar who is currently undertaking her pre-hospital fellowship over with Essex & Hertfordshire Air Ambulance. She sat down with Orla to discuss all things pre-hospital EM, her current career path and her plans for the future.
Dr. Karen Harris
Next up, we head north to visit Dr Karen Harris, a consultant in Emergency Medicine in Sligo University Hospital. In her interview with Deirdre, she talked us through her career path from the start including a brief exploration of the world of orthopaedics(!) and how she decided on emergency medicine. Extremely passionate about the speciality, Dr Harris offers some tips to potential future EM trainees (because we all love to cajole some medical students our way).
Dr. Kirsty Challen
Next up, Deirdre’s off to the UK to meet the Chairperson of the Women in Emergency Medicine Special Interest Group (WEMSIG) of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine. A Consultant in Emergency Medicine and self-declared “fully grown toddler”, Dr Challen provides some crucial tips to navigating the world of EM. In case you can’t get enough, check out The Skeptic’s Guide to Emergency Medicine and some of her #PaperInAPics. Listen in. You don’t want to miss this.
Dr. Sinéad Ní Bhraonáin
Deirdre's back and this time she's talking to Dr Sinéad Ní Bhraonáin, one of Irish EM's greats who has completed a difficult airway fellowship, a pre hospital and critical care fellowship with NSW Ambulance Service Sydney HEMS and an Emergency Medicine fellowship in Australia. She's currently in Sydney, busy being an exemplary leader in the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the Sydney Local Health District at large.
Presidents: Dr. Emily O’Conor & Dr. Katherine Henderson
We’re rounding off this month’s series of FemInEM conversations with a whopper discussion! It’s a veritable buffet of leadership as IAEM’s immediate past president Dr Emily O’Conor and RCEM’s current president Dr Katherine Henderson sit down to talk to our own Orla Kelly, current IEMTA president.
